Menstrual Pad Initiative
Supporting girls in managing menstrual hygiene
The menstrual pad initiative strives to provide menstrual pads to girls in need and empower them to stay in school by educating them on menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health. Girls Space also help to end stigma, raise awareness, and engage in advocacy to support girls.
The Issues
Many girls in Sierra Leone especially those in low-income household often have difficulty obtaining menstrual products (pads) because the pads are not easily available, or they cannot afford to buy them due to financial barriers. School girls without pads usually stay home during their periods or forced to drop out of school due to lack of menstrual pads, stigma, and shame. The schools do not have resources to send girls home with schoolwork while menstruating. Girls that drop out of school are much more likely to marry early, which may affect their health and lead them to poverty. Access to menstrual pads and educating girls about sexual and reproductive health enables them to feel confident and comfortable in a learning environment.
Collaboration and Partnership
Intercommunity Girls Space collaborates and partners with individuals, schools, organizations, and the communities to provide disposable menstrual pads or reusable cloth pad, run educational workshops, and raise awareness about menstruation issues,
